[Road Trips Main] [California] [Western U.S.] [Vancouver & Canadian Rockies] [Mexico] [March Break 2005] [Europe] [Dream Vacations]

Here are some research tools that I've used in the past.  I've also included specific information about California, Vancouver & Canadian Rockies.  In 2004, I hope I'll be able to add a page or two about trips to Europe or Central America.

Guides/General Starting Point

Mapquest Road Trip Planner (U.S. only)

Lonely Planet

Frommer's Guide

  • I like Frommer's Guide a lot; it helped me to find some really great restaurants in Banff.

National Geographic

Search Engines/Portals

Google

Yahoo

Maps & Driving Directions

MSN Maps & Directions

Mapquest

Yahoo Maps & Driving Directions

Hotels etc

- Read the terms carefully, especially the cancellation policies.

Expedia Canada

Travelocity

Destina

  • Get 1 Aeroplan point for every 3 dollars spent... as long as Air Canada doesn't go under.

Hotels.ca

  • Usually offers the best hotel deals of the listed websites.

For the budget travelers:

Hostelling International

Instead of going thru the individual car rental companies' websites, I found Travelocity to be the most comprehensive site, with the most user-friendly features.

Alamo

  • Discount code: 699338

  • Discount code: 307525 (10% off)

Avis

Budget

  • BCD X702600 (10% off standard weekend rates and 15% off standard weekly rates)

Dollar

  • RBC04 (10% off standard weekly and weekend rates)

Enterprise

Hertz

  • Good for Leisure weekend or weekly rate rentals, through May 31, 2004

  • CDP: 221417 (up to 10% discount)

  • CDP: 436521 (up to 10% discount)

  • CDP: 1166620 (10% off standard or leisure rates)

  • PC#: 949664 (double upgrade from compact to premium)

  • 750 Aeroplan miles

National

  • 5126424 (20% off standard or best available rates)

Thrifty

  • I had a very bad experience renting from Thrifty in May, 2004.  Basically, upon returning the car at the Calgary airport, thrifty noticed a barely visible dent on the front bender for which I wasn't responsible for, and proceeded to charge me for the damage 5 months after the car rental.  I have another friend who had an even worse time with thrifty.  Highly recommend against renting vehicles from them.

Air Travel

Tango

  • Discount airfares for flights within Canada and to the U.S.

Air Canada

CIBC Aerogold Visa

Annual fee: $120.  Get an annual (to be verified) complementary companion ticket anywhere Air Canada flies.

American Express Gold Card

Annual fee: $120.  Get an one-time complementary companion ticket.  With the free supplementary gold cards, I think this is a better deal than the CIBC card.
