[Road Trips Main] [California] [Western U.S.] [Vancouver & Canadian Rockies] [Mexico] [March Break 2005] [Europe] [Dream Vacations]

During the Victoria Day long-weekend in May, 2003, a friend and I flew to Vancouver, spent several days there, drove through the BC interior, the Canadian Rockies and flew home from Calgary.  The highlights of the trip included the Grouse Grind hike, Granville Room, ostrich fondue and other moments.  Click here for the complete itinerary.

Lodging

  • Hi Vancouver Central

Located in downtown Vancouver on Granville Street.  Clean, individual washrooms.  Rooms were nice too.

Nature

  • Stanley Park

Large urban park with beautiful flowers, biking trails and an aquarium.

  • Grouse Grind

There are two ways to get to the top of Grouse Mountain: via Skyride or your two feet.  We decided to hike up and take the ride down.  The trail is 1.8 miles with an elevation gain of 2800 ft.

BC Interior and Alberta

It took us about a day to drive from Vancouver to Jasper.  Because it wasn't the tourist season yet, there were few vehicles on the Trans Canada and other highways.  We could stop the car in the middle of the road to snap a few pictures before continuing with our journey.

Maligne Lake

One of the prettiest lakes in the Rockies.  Why was it still frozen in May?

Athabasca Falls

We ended up spending the night at the HI Jasper hostel in a huge dorm room with about 25 bunk beds.

Columbia Icefield

The largest ice cap south of the Arctic cycle, the Columbia Icefield covers 325 sq. km.  It can easily be spotted from the Icefield Parkway that connects Jasper to Banff...

Lake Louise

Across the lake are Mt. Victoria and the Victoria Glacier.  The immediate left is Fairview Mountain.

Someone should've warned us that the lake would still be frozen over in late May.  No wonder there were few cars along the Icefield Parkway.

Great hostel.  Affordable rate.  Who needs to stay at Banff Spring?

Calgary

Frommer's Guide

We drove into town at around 6 pm.  Even though it was a week night, the downtown area was totally deserted.  Ended up driving by University of Calgary campus and Canada Olympic Park quickly.

Edmonton

Frommer's Guide

I visited Edmonton during a separate trip in February, 2004.  It's the capital city of Alberta and a gateway to Jasper National Park (only 4 hours away).

Points of Interest - West Edmonton Mall

The world's largest shopping centre.  Easily accessible via public transit.

Points of Interest - Whyte Ave. (Old Strathcona)

Interesting shops only several blocks south of University of Alberta.

Lodging - Coast Edmonton Plaza

Friendly staff, free shuttle service within the downtown area.
