[Road Trips Main] [California] [Western U.S.] [Vancouver & Canadian Rockies] [Mexico] [March Break 2005] [Europe] [Dream Vacations]

Hola and welcome to the Mexican page.  This is one country that I would very much like to visit.  Love the food...  I didn't have a chance to go to Guadalajara this summer, but I did manage to go to Baja with the Cornerstone team in August 2004.  Click here to access the trip itinerary and select photos.

Baja California

Baja peninsula is just south of the Golden State and therefore easily accessible.  Click here for a map of the entire region.

Tijuana

Tacky border town with lots of traffic.  A few miles past the border, the poorer, shabby part of town was a sight I was quite unprepared for.

Ensenada

Famous for the pescado (white fish, to be exact) tacos.  I had some great ones in town, as well as the shrimp tacos.

San Antonio de Las Minas

I went with the Cornerstone missions team to the El Salzal Orphanage from August 6 to 15, 2004.  San Antonia de Las Minas is just 20 minutes off Ensenada in Baja California.  Click here for the itinerary and photo gallery.

San Felipe

Visited for a few days here in the summer of 2000.  San Felipe, by the sea of Cortez, is a little fishing town where a lot of Mexicans spend their vacations.  The water is warm but not very clean.

Couldn't find a Clip Art file for Baja.  This is about as close as it gets.

Jalisco

Guadalajara

The second largest city in Mexico, Guadalajara is known as the "Pearl of the West" or "City of Roses."

Universidad de Guadalajara

  • CEPE (The Center for Foreign Students)

    • $322 USD tuition + $192 USD casa international

    • Plus road trips to Tequila, Chapala, Guanajuato and Oaxaca

    • Maybe next summer...

Tequila

About an hour away from Guadalajara, it is the birth place of the famous drink.

Mexican Food 101

Salsa and guacamole are probably two of the easiest appetizers to make.  Having had genuine Mexican food in California, Taco Bell sadly doesn't cut it anymore.

During my recent trip to Mexico, I was introduced to the yummy dessert churros for the first time.  A simple recipe posted by the Food Network can be found here.

Spanish 101

¿Cómo estás? Bien.  (How are you?  Fine.)

¿Qué hay de nuevo? Nada.  (What's new?  Nothing.)

¡Hola!  (Hello, "h" not pronounced, so it sounds like ola :)

Me llamo Evelyn.  (My name is Evelyn)

¡Adiós! = ¡Chau!   (Bye)
