What kind of degrees and courses do I need to work at an accounting firm?"

To work at an accounting firm any degree will get you started. Many representatives from accounting firms have had degrees in Drama, Philosophy, etc. You do not need any accounting courses to begin working at an accounting firm, but it is recommended to at least have taken introduction courses.

However, to become a professional in the field as a CA/CGA/CPA/CMA, you will eventually be required to take certain accounting courses that are required.

Thus, taking accounting courses in university will help you earn a designation title (CA/CGA/CPA/CMA) in a shorter time period.

What job opportunities are available for accounting students?"

At the entry level (straight out of graduation), depending on the experience requirement of your designation, look for opportunities at

  • Accounting firms: Local, regional and national practices.

  • Finance departments: Manufacturing, retail, sports and entertainment industries.

  • Public sector: Auditor General, CCRA, Ministry of Finance, at various levels (municipal, provincial and federal).

  • Not-for-profit organizations: Hospitals, charities, and universities.

The possibilities are endless! Keep your eyes peeled for opportunities and always be proactive.

What events do you hold during the year?"

Information sessions and seminars form the heart of ASUT events. These events are great if you are still considering a career in accounting, or wondering if there is more to bean counting in this profession. We promise that you will find out a lot more about the profession by chatting with the crowd at our events and likely to break your perception of a typical accountant.

Check out our upcoming events by clicking here!

Who can attend the events? Is there usually a sign-up?"

All students interested in any aspect of our event are welcomed to our events. You are usually required to sign-up by on our website or by emailing the events' sign-up email address.

Signing-up is highly recommended as it allows ASUT to prepare a professional-looking name tag for you beforehand and assists us in estimating the right amount of food, drinks and events materials. You will not be penalized if you do not attend the event after signing up; however, that is not encouraged. If you realize that you are unable to attend an event after signing up, it would be courtesy to inform us by email.

How do I become an ASUT Executive?"

Elections for next year's (2006/2007) Executives occur in March. By attending our events and helping out as a committee member, you'll gain a better understanding of how ASUT is run and you'll be able to evaluate whether or not you'd make a good candidate!
