Floyd L. Moreland and Rita M. Fleischer, Latin: An Intensive Course (University of California Press, 1990)

This course is intended for students with no (or little) previous knowledge of Latin. The word “intensive” is not idle: the concepts, pace, and workload are very hard, especially in the first ten weeks, in which memorization is an essential component. There are no shortcuts. In later classes, especially in the spring term, there is more time for practice reading and consolidation, but please note that any gaps in your grammatical knowledge will inevitably lead to serious misunderstanding of the sense.

Please follow this schedule carefully. Read through the whole of each unit before the first class on it (generally Mondays) and prepare the specified assignment(s), memorizing all forms and vocabulary. These assignments will be done orally in class. Written quizzes on the preceding unit will occur at the beginning of each week (generally Mondays). These quizzes will be given at the beginning of classes. Quizzes will be marked and returned later in the week. Remember that the course is non-credit.

For translations of the exercises, see the Moreland and Fleischer tab of this site (abbreviated "M and F"). In my grammatical handouts, I have borrowed freely from other grammars and textbooks, especially 'Bradley’s Arnold’ Latin Prose Composition, as revised and edited by Sir James Mountford (facsimile reprint of the original edition by Duckworth Academic and Bristol Classical Press).

The translations and grammatical handouts are intended for private study only; they are not for wide distribution. Please if you would like to use these materials for purposes other than private study.
