Highlights of Programs and Activities

The outreach programs and activities organized by the Department of French in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts and Science, University of Toronto, follow the recommendations of the Report of the Task Force on Outreach Activities at the University of Toronto released in May 2008.

Chair: Toronto Universities’ French Contest, 2006, 2008, 2010
The Toronto Universities’ French Contest, a major academic enrichment event organized in alternate years by the Department of French, University of Toronto, St. George Campus and York University; a credit to the partnership between the Department of French, University of Toronto, and secondary teachers from eight public and catholic Boards of Education, private and independent schools in Toronto and the Greater Toronto area, the French Contest challenges 100 secondary school students to develop and enhance their academic skills in French.

Annual Program Coordinator: University of Toronto Arts and Science Mentorship Program in French, since 2007
Gifted senior high school students interested in enriching their academic studies have the opportunity to participate in the Literary Research Project: « L’art de la séduction chez Zola: “Nana” ». Students learn the basic principles of textual and electronic research; conduct independent research activities on the works of Émile Zola at the Centre for 19th Century French Studies (

Annual Presenter: Gifted Conference, since 2007
A day-long conference for gifted high school students who want to learn more about French language and culture programs and courses, as well as to get a feel for campus life. Recent presentation: Virtue, Tragic Passion and Upper-Class Excess in De Laclos’s “Dangerous Liaisons”

Program Coordinator: Student Leaders in French, since 2007
Motivated student leaders who are interested in developing their oral and written French skills and want to promote the use of French are invited to apply for a student leader liaison position at the Department of French. The selected students participate in the organization of cultural events and academic enrichment sessions.

Event Coordinator: “La semaine de la langue française” 2007, 2008
This week-long event encourages the use of French outside the classroom and is organized for prospective students as well as for graduate and undergraduate students in the Department of French The activities include: Language Workshops and Study Abroad Program Orientations, French Club events, a Teaching Conference for New Teaching Assistants.

Regular consultations and participation in Campus France (http://www.campusfrance.org/en/rubrique/campusfrance) and Swiss-Canadian Mobility Program Events (http://www.swiss-canadian-mobility.ca/) intended to encourage the mobility of French, Swiss and Canadians students and offer them the opportunity to gain work experience abroad.
