The Auditory-Verbal Approach incorporates principles of Auditory-Verbal Therapy and Auditory-Verbal Education.
Auditory-Verbal Therapy
Programs using Auditory-Verbal Therapy focus on guiding and coaching parents and caregivers to use their child’s amplified/replaced hearing (through hearing aids or cochlear implants) to develop clear spoken language through listening. Parents and caregivers become the primary facilitators of their child’s spoken language development. Ultimately, parents and caregivers can gain confidence in their child’s academic, social and occupational success. This program involves early diagnosis, one-on-one therapy and state-of-the-art audiological management and technology. Auditory-Verbal Therapy adheres to the 10 Principles of Listening and Spoken Language Specialties of Auditory-Verbal Therapy which are integrated into daily life.
Auditory-Verbal Education
Programs using Auditory-Verbal Education focus on teaching listening and clear spoken language to children with hearing loss for entry into mainstream education. This program can be conducted in one-on-one or group therapy sessions administered by a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist in Auditory Verbal Education. Auditory-Verbal Education is guided by the 10 Principles of Listening and Spoken Language Specialties Auditory-Verbal Education.
Benefits of training in the Auditory-Verbal Approach
Course participants gain the necessary knowledge and practical skills required to develop clear spoken language through audition for children with hearing loss in a variety of educational settings. Completing courses in the Auditory-Verbal Approach contributes to the requirements for AG Bell Academy Certification Exam in Auditory-Verbal Therapy or Auditory-Verbal Education, additional candidacy requirements can be found at www.agbellacademy.org.
