There is a easy trail off the Emerald Bay vista point that will take you down to the Vikingsholm castle and the lakeshore. Don't miss it.

If you have time, don't miss the opportunity to drive through old Red Wood groves and be awed by breath-taking ocean views. You can literally drive from Oregon south to around Los Angeles on HW1. Highly recommended. (BTW, the roads are quite windy so bring some pills for motion-sickness if necessary.)
Been there, done that. We went there during the Memorial weekend in 2000. Sipping Gatorade in the 117F shade was quite an experience after hiking the sand dunes for over an hour during midday.
What a complete waste of time... To avoid hiking up Nevada Falls from Yosemite Valley, I decided to go for a little joy ride myself by visiting Mono Lake, near the east gate of Yosemite National Park. It took me 2.5 hrs to get there and because I was there at 3 in the afternoon, there wasn't any nice reflections to take pictures of.
Called the Danish capital of U.S. A little out of the way but very charming and worth the detour.
The 21 Franciscan missions were built along El Camino Real. I've visited about half of them during my various trips. Californian history can be seen and felt here.
