MORE VENICE AND ROME

A shot of Venetian gondoliers taking a break.  A gondola ride is ridiculously expensive (and ridiculously cheesy), so I recommend instead the vaporettos, or water buses.  They're relatively cheap and travel all over Venice, and with a day pass you can ride them unlimited.  I recommend Vaporetto #1 especially, as it's the one that saunters down the entire Grand Canal and offers awe-inspiring views of Venice.  (Sorry, the slight pixelation in the image is from shrinking it to 1024x768.)

The view from the tower (sorry, I mean campanile) at San Giorgio Maggiore, a quiet island across from the main part of Venice.  I went up both this tower and the one in St. Mark's Square, and although the one in St. Mark's Square undeniably offers a better view, this one at San Giorgio is cheap and is run by gracious monks!  Plus you get to see more of the water around the city, and get away from the zillion tourists clogging Venice.

Another pigeon shot from St. Mark's Square.  For 1 Euro, you can have the time of your life feeding these flying rats!  Totally worth it.

The stunning view of Venice from the campanile in St. Mark's Square.  Note the red-shingled rooftops of old Italian cities like Venice and Florence.

Forget the Sistine Chapel (I adore Michelangelo, but I found the chapel underwhelming and fell asleep in it) -- I thought the most impressive room in the Vatican Museum was one of the gift shops, whose ceiling is shown here.  CORRECTION: I've been informed that this is actually the Gallery of Maps.  Not that it makes a difference, since the museum staff only use the hall these days to hawk their tacky goods.  Just keep your eyes on the ceiling and keep walking!

The dome of St. Peter's Basilica, as viewed from the Vatican Museum.  Note the interesting bonsai-like trees of Rome.  Apparently the city trims them like that, those poor trees.
