Logo Design - Hong Kong Design Institute Competition
(2006)
The design brief was to create a logo for the newly established Hong Kong Design Institute, one which could convey the dynamic quality of the school and also be easily recognizable.
The inspiration for this entry comes from the idea of a spark or explosion, a reference towards the nature of students and their creativity at the school. Symbolically, the three solids are a reference to the three different fields in which the school brings together, that being design, fashion + textiles, and printing + media. The sharpness of the logo is also intended to reflect the incisive thinking of students.
The energy that is carried through the geometric form of the logo is continued through the use of colour, a distinctive purple that is easily recognizable and used to associate with the school. The advantage of such a simple design also allows it to be adapted to different situations, such that the colour could be changed to convey a different meaning, but still be easily recognizable as a logo of the institute.
The shape is instantly recognizable due to its unique appearance. As it is composed of simple geometric shapes, it does not make reference to any particular period of art, and thus, can be used for a long period of time without seeming to be outdated. It can also be adapted to a wide variety of functions, and can be used without the text in certain events.
