Depending on their expertise and experience ergonomists and usability professionals may rank higher or lower than colleagues. Titles like Senior Ergonomist are common. But the concept of seniors, juniors, and the department heads that direct all of the ergonomists, fits right inside the typical corporate hierarchy meaning that you nearly always have someone to answer to. Unless that person is an ergonomist themselves, there tends to be freedom in how you conduct your work, assuming that you have a great deal of education and experience to back you up, and assuming that you follow your boss' timetable.
